Sadko
a Soviet steamship-icebreaker, built in 1912 in Newcastle, Great Britain. Length, 78 m; width, 11.4 m; displacement, 3,800 tons. Scientific explorations in the seas of the Soviet arctic were carried out on the Sadko in the 1930’s. In 1935 the Sadko was used for the first high-latitude expedition commanded by G. A. Ushakov, during which the island that bears his name was discovered. This expedition was the first since the voyage of the Fram (1893–96) to explore the deep water regions of the Arctic Basin. The Sadko sank in 1941 in the Kara Sea. The vessel was named for the hero of the Novgorod bylinà Sadko. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
