Sadko

a Soviet steamship-icebreaker, built in 1912 in Newcastle, Great Britain. Length, 78 m; width, 11.4 m; displacement, 3,800 tons. Scientific explorations in the seas of the Soviet arctic were carried out on the Sadko in the 1930’s. In 1935 the Sadko was used for the first high-latitude expedition commanded by G. A. The Sadko sank in 1941 in the Kara Sea. The vessel was named for the hero of the Novgorod bylinà Sadko.
