Sadovskii, Aleksandr Ivanovich 

Born Nov. 24 (Dec. 6), 1859, in Vitebsk; died Dec. 26, 1923, in Prague. Russian physicist.

Sadovskii graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1881. He held teaching positions at the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineering, the Nikolai Naval Academy, and the St. Petersburg Institute of Mines. In 1894 he became a professor at Iur’ev University (now the University of Tartu). In 1898, Sadovskii became the first person to demonstrate theoretically that an electromagnetic field possesses angular momentum. Known as the Sadovskii effect, this phenomenon was detected experimentally in 1935 by R. Beth of the USA.
