safety rod [′sāf·tē ‚räd]
(nucleonics) A control rod capable of shutting down a reactor quickly in case of failure of the ordinary control system using regulating rods and shim rods; a safety rod may be suspended above the core by a magnetic coupling and allowed to fall in when power reaches a predetermined level.
