Name Origin: From an Abnaki Indian word probably meaning 'land of the mouth,' or 'mouth of the river,' for its location at the confluence of the Androscoggin and Kennebec rivers where they meet the Atlantic. Area (sq mi): 370.19 (land 253.90; water 116.29). Pop per sq mi: 145.60. Pop 2005: 36,962. State rank: 12. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.00%; 1990-2000 5.00%. Pop 2000: 35,214 (White 95.90%; Black or African American 0.90%; Hispanic or Latino 1.10%; Asian 0.60%; Other 2.00%). Foreign born: 2.40%. Median age: 38.00.
