Name Origin: For Saguache Creek, which flows through the county; from a Ute Indian word meaning 'blue earth,' or 'water at the blue earth.' Area (sq mi): 3170.25 (land 3168.44; water 1.82). Pop per sq mi: 2.20. Pop 2005: 7,031. State rank: 45. Pop change: 2000-20005 18.80%; 1990-2000 28.10%. Pop 2000: 5,917 (White 51.60%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 45.30%; Asian 0.50%; Other 28.20%). Foreign born: 14.50%. Median age: 36.90. Income 2000: per capita $13,121; median household $25,495; Pop below poverty level: 22.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $15,260-$18,063. Unemployment 2004: 7.00%. Change from 2000: -1.30%.
