Saguaro National Park, 91,443 acres (37,021 hectares), SE Ariz. Contained within the desert park are many examples of the saguaro cactus (Cereus giganteus), a monumentally proportioned, now rare species whose blossom is Arizona's state flower. Also growing in the park are other types of cacti and a variety of desert flora. The area was proclaimed a national monument in 1933 and became a national park in 1994. Saguaro National Park

Mountain and desert region, southern Arizona, U.S. Established as a national monument in 1933, it became a national park in 1994. It has a total area of 143 sq mi (370 sq km). Its two districts, separated by the city of Tucson, contain forests of saguaro cactus. Plant life also includes paloverde, mesquite, and ocotillo.

Size: 91,440 acres.
Established: Proclaimed a national monument on March 1, 1933; transferred from Forest Service on August 10, 1933. Wilderness designated on October 20, 1976. Redesignated a national park on October 14, 1994.
Location: Park consists of two districts: the Tucson Mountain District or Saguaro West, and the much larger Rincon Mountain District or Saguaro East. The two areas, separated by the city of Tucson, Arizona, are 30 miles apart.
Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Backcountry camping, hiking, bicycling, auto touring, guided walks, environmental education programs.
Special Features: Giant saguaro cacti, unique to the Sonoran Desert, cover the valley floor and rise into the neighboring Rincon and West Tucson mountains. Five biotic life zones are represented here, from desert to ponderosa pine forest.
