Saint Elias, Mount (ĭlī`əs), 18,008 ft (5,489 m) high, in the St. Elias Mts. on the U.S.-Canadian border between SW Yukon Territory and SE Alaska; fourth highest peak of North America. It was first seen by Danish explorer Vitus Bering Bering, Vitus Jonassen , 1681–1741, Danish explorer in Russian employ. In 1725 he was selected by Peter I to explore far NE Siberia.
