On central Atlantic coast of FL, north of Palm Beach; organized Mar 14, 1844 (prior to statehood) from Mosquito County; name changed to Brevard County on Jan 6, 1855. The present-day Saint Lucie County was organized from Brevard County May 24, 1905. Name Origin: For Saint Lucy (c.283-303), early Christian martyr.

Area (sq mi): 688.08 (land 572.45; water 115.63). Pop per sq mi: 421.50.
Pop 2005: 241,305. State rank: 21. Pop change: 2000-20005 25.20%; 1990-2000 28.30%. Pop 2000: 192,695 (White 74.10%; Black or African American 15.40%; Hispanic or Latino 8.20%; Asian 0.90%; Other 4.50%). Foreign born: 10.50%. Median age: 42.00.
Income 2000: per capita $18,790; median household $36,363; Pop below poverty level: 13.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,237-$23,051.
Unemployment 2004: 6.20%. Change from 2000: -2.10%. Median travel time to work: 25.90 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 34.50%.
