On southern border of MD, bounded by the Potomac River on the west, the Patuxent River on the east, and Chesapeake Bay on the south; the first original county, organized 1637. Name Origin: For Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. The ships Ark and Dove, carrying colonists, landed on Saint Clement's Island on Mar 25, 1634, the Feast of the Annunciation of Mary.
