On the southeastern border of LA, east of Baton Rouge; organized Oct 27, 1810 (prior to statehood) from Feliciana Parish. Name Origin: For a celebrated Delaware Indian chief who lived in the 1600s; from Tamanend, possibly 'friendly' or 'affable.' His admirers claimed him as their "patron saint" during the American Revolution.

Area (sq mi): 1124.08 (land 854.15; water 269.93). Pop per sq mi: 257.90.
Pop 2005: 220,295. State rank: 5. Pop change: 2000-20005 15.20%; 1990-2000 32.40%. Pop 2000: 191,268 (White 85.30%; Black or African American 9.90%; Hispanic or Latino 2.50%; Asian 0.70%; Other 2.30%). Foreign born: 2.40%. Median age: 36.30.
Income 2000: per capita $22,514; median household $47,883; Pop below poverty level: 9.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $29,220-$31,639.
