Saint Venant's principle [‚sän·və′nänz ′prin·sə·pəl]

(mechanics)

The principle that the strains that result from application, to a small part of a body's surface, of a system of forces that are statically equivalent to zero force and zero torque become negligible at distances which are large compared with the dimensions of the part.
