Sajó

(also Slaná), a river in Czechoslovakia and Hungary, a right tributary of the Tisza River of the Danube basin. The Sajó is 229 km long and drains an area of 12,700 sq km. The river rises in the Slovak Ore Mountains and flows, for the most part, in a broad valley; in its lower course it flows along the Middle Danube Plain. The Sajó is fed primarily by rain, and freshets occur in the summer and fall. The mean flow rate is approximately 70 cu m per sec. In some years, the river freezes over for one or two months. It is used for timber flotation. The Hungarian city of Miskolc is located on the Sajó.
