Sakhalin Gulf
a gulf of the Sea of Okhotsk, lying between the mainland north of the mouth of the Amur and the northern tip of Sakhalin Island. Wide in the north, the gulf narrows in the south, merging with the Amur estuary. The maximum width is 160 km. Most of the shores are low-lying. The gulf is covered with ice from November through June. It has irregular diurnal tides of 2–3 m. Salmon and cod are caught in the gulf, and the port of Moskal’vo is situated on its eastern shore.
