Saks, Vladimir Nikolaevich 

Born Apr. 9 (22), 1911, in St. Petersburg. Soviet geologist and paleontologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1958. Member of the CPSU since 1955.

Saks graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Mines in 1933. From 1935 to 1940 and from 1944 to 1948 he worked at the Arctic Institute, and from 1940 to 1944 he worked at the Mining Geology Administration of the Main Northern Sea Route Administration. Since 1948 he has been working at the Institute of Geology of the Arctic. In 1958 he became head of the laboratory of Mesozoic and Cenozoic stratigraphy and paleontology of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Saks worked out detailed plans of the stratigraphy of the Anthropogenic beds of Byelorussia and the Soviet arctic and of the Mesozoic gas- and oil-bearing strata of the Ust’-Enisei and Khatanga depressions. He has been awarded three Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, and also various medals.
