Salado, Río (rē`ō sälä`thō) [Sp.,=salty river], name of several South American rivers, including more than 10 in Argentina. The most important is the Río Salado del Norte (c.1,250 mi/2,010 km long), rising in the Andes near Salta, N Argentina, and flowing SE through a livestock-raising region, to the Paraná River at Santa Fe. Salt and sulfur are mined along its upper course. The construction of minor canals has drained its lower course.
