Salado, Río (rē`ō sälä`thō) [Sp.,=salty river], name of several South American rivers, including more than 10 in Argentina. The most important is the Río Salado del Norte (c.1,250 mi/2,010 km long), rising in the Andes near Salta, N Argentina, and flowing SE through a livestock-raising region, to the Paraná River at Santa Fe. Salt and sulfur are mined along its upper course. The construction of minor canals has drained its lower course. How to thank TFD for its existence?
