Salado

a river in Argentina, a right tributary of the Paraná. The upper course is called the Guachipas, then the Juramento or Paşaje. The Salado measures 1,300 km long and drains an area of approximately 160,000 sq km. It originates on the eastern slopes of the Central Andes, where it has the characteristics of a young river. In its middle and lower courses, in the valleys of the Gran Chaco, the channel is extremely variable and divides into branches. During the rainy season (November through March) the river overflows significantly and becomes navigable; during the dry season (May through September) it becomes very shallow, drying up in some sections and forming a system of salt lakes and swamps. The mean flow rate in the upper course is approximately 40 cu m per sec, and in the lower course, because of losses to seepage and evaporation, approximately 15 cu m per sec.
