a peninsula in southeastern Italy. Measuring approximately 150 km long, the Salentine Peninsula is a hilly plain, with elevations to 300 m. It is composed primarily of limestones and dolomites; karst is well developed. Grapes and tobacco are cultivated there. The main cities are Taranto and Brindisi.
