Salgótarján

Salgótarján (shŏl`gōtŏr'yän), city (1991 est. pop. 47,500), N Hungary, near the Slovak border. It is an industrial center with ironworks, glassworks, and manufactures of agricultural machinery. Salgótarján was a small settlement that grew rapidly after the discovery of coal there in the early 19th cent. Nearby, on a basaltic hill, are the ruins of a medieval fortress.
Salgótarján 

a city in northern Hungary, on the Zagyva River. Capital of the megye (county) of Nógrád. Population, 44,000 (1976). Salgótarján is the center of the Nógrád Coalfield, from which brown coal is extracted. Industries include metallurgy, the production of mining equipment, agricultural machine building, and the manufacture of metal goods, glass, and bricks.
