Salinas Grandes (sälē`näs grän`dās), salt desert, c.3,200 sq mi (8,290 sq km), in Córdoba and Santiago del Estero provs., N Argentina. The Córdoba-Tucumán RR crosses the desert. Sodium and potassium are mined there.
Salinas Grandes a solonchak desert in northwestern Argentina, situated in a tectonic depression at an elevation of 170 m, between two massifs of the pampean Sierras—the Sierra del Alto and the Sierra de Córdoba. The area is 8,500 sq km. It is the relict of an ancient lake and contains soda and potassium. The Tucumán-Córdoba railroad has been built across the Salinas Grandes.
