A few years ago, Salman Rushdie and I discussed the idea that Muslim culture is rich with humanistic heritage that can be traced back to the democratizing tendencies of Cyrus and ancient Persia, and to the great medieval philosophers Ibn Sinna and Ibn Rushid, who ironically helped preserve Aristotelian philosophy for the West. Salman Rushdie once said in an interview that for him tradition had never functioned as a straitjacket: "tradition was something to rip apart and trample on. I remember well the death threats my family endured when my father was one of the few Muslim voices publicly denouncing the fatwa by Ayatollah Khomeini against Salman Rushdie, because it violated Islam's principles of free speech and of the sanctity of life. |
