, class Magnoliopsida, order Polemoniales, family Solanaceae.
Salpiglossis

a genus of annual or perennial herbs of the family Solanaceae. The stems are glandular-pubescent and only slightly branching. The alternate, entire leaves are sinuate or pinnatisect. The flowers are on long pedicels and in loose racemose or panicled inflorescences. The calyx is five-parted. The corolla is obliquely funnelform and has a long tubule and a limb with five broad, emarginate lobes. The fruit is a capsule.

There are about ten species, distributed in South America, mainly in Chile. The annual painted tongue (S. sinuata) is used as a border plant and for cut flowers; its varieties differ in height (50–100 cm) and in the color of the corolla—from white to red-brown and blue-violet (with darker veins).
