salp: see tunicate tunicate , marine animal of the phylum Chordata, which also includes the vertebrates. The adult form of most tunicates (also called urochordates) shows no resemblance to vertebrate animals, but such a resemblance is evident in the larva.

The species were found by Mark Baird of the CSIRO, along with researchers from University of NSW (New South Wales), who conducted a marine survey last month that resulted in the discovery of a massive abundance of salps in the waters around Sydney.
Our first three trawls yielded scattered pieces of plastic, a few visible nurdles (raw plastic pellets) and a host of colourful organisms--numerous copepods, salps, Portuguese Man O'War and other miniscule creatures.
As the larger predators are removed so the bottom-feeders, the algae and the salps, proliferate.
