In north-central UT, on the eastern shore of Great Salt Lake; original county. Organized as Great Salt Lake County in 1849 (prior to statehood); name changed Jan 29, 1868. Name Origin: For the Great Salt Lake.

Area (sq mi): 807.78 (land 737.38; water 70.40). Pop per sq mi: 1285.90.
Pop 2005: 948,172. State rank: 1. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.50%; 1990-2000 23.80%. Pop 2000: 898,387 (White 80.90%; Black or African American 1.10%; Hispanic or Latino 11.90%; Asian 2.60%; Other 10.10%). Foreign born: 10.40%. Median age: 28.90.
Income 2000: per capita $20,190; median household $48,373; Pop below poverty level: 8.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,674-$29,699.
