Prior to 1905, the Salton Sink was a hellishly hot but thriving agricultural area lying along the bottom of the lowest geological point in North America.
Originally called the Salton Sink, thislake is 227' below sea level and began as a depository for agricultural drainage.
But flood waters almost busted through and filled the ancient lake bed known as the Salton Sink for 16 months.
