Saltonstall, Leverett (1892–1979) governor, U.S. senator; born in Chestnut Hill, Mass. A member of the Massachusetts legislature (Rep.; 1923–36) and Speaker from 1929, he was elected governor (1939–45). He served in the U.S. Senate (1945–67) and was Republican whip (1949–57).
