In west-central SC, west of Columbia; organized 1895 from Edgefield County. Name Origin: For the Saluda River, which forms its northern border, itself named perhaps from Cherokee selu 'corn,' for the corn-growing area, with ending tah 'river': 'corn river.'

Area (sq mi): 461.78 (land 452.48; water 9.30). Pop per sq mi: 41.80.
Pop 2005: 18,895. State rank: 42. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.50%; 1990-2000 17.30%. Pop 2000: 19,181 (White 62.20%; Black or African American 30.00%; Hispanic or Latino 7.30%; Asian 0.00%; Other 4.10%). Foreign born: 5.90%. Median age: 37.00.
Income 2000: per capita $16,328; median household $35,774; Pop below poverty level: 15.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,990-$22,910.
Unemployment 2004: 7.50%. Change from 2000: 2.20%. Median travel time to work: 32.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 55.70%.
