Samarin, Aleksandr Mikhailovich 

Born Aug. 1 (14), 1902, in the village of Sakony, in what is now Ardatov Raion, Gorky Oblast; died May 20, 1970, in Moscow. Soviet metallurgist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966; corresponding member, 1946). Member of the CPSU from 1925.

From 1925 to 1929, Samarin was a member of the Central Bureau of Proletarian Students; he was also a member of the presidium and corresponding secretary of the bureau. After graduating from the department of metallurgy of the Moscow Academy of Mines in 1930, he taught at the Moscow Institute of Steel, which was formed that same year from the department of metallurgy. He became a professor in 1938. From 1946 to 1951 he was deputy minister of higher education of the USSR. From 1955 he worked at the A. A. Baikov Institute of Metallurgy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; he was the institute’s director from 1960 to 1961 and from 1967 to 1970.

From 1961 to 1966, Samarin was deputy chairman of the State Committee of the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the Coordination of Scientific Research.

Samarin’s main work was on the electrometallurgy of steel and ferroalloys, the physiochemical basis of metallurgical processes, the desulfurization and deoxidation of steel, the use of complex deoxidants, aspects of vacuum metallurgy, and the study of the nature of slag melts.

Samarin was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and several medals.
