Samarskii, Aleksandr Andreevich 

Born Feb. 19, 1919, in Amvrosievka, in what is now Donetsk Oblast. Soviet mathematician. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1946.

Samarksii graduated from Moscow State University in 1945 and became a professor there in 1959. His principal works deal with mathematical physics and computer mathematics. Samar-skii has developed a general theory of finite-difference schemes of operator and finite-difference-operator equations and a stability theory of finite-difference schemes. His work has been made use of in computational algorithms that have been successfully applied to the computer solution of important problems in various fields of science and engineering. Samarskii received the Lenin Prize in 1962 and the State Prize of the USSR in 1954. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
