Sambal

one of the peoples of the Philippines. They number about 150,000 (1973, estimate) and live along the southwestern coast of the isle of Luzon, interspersed to a significant degree with the Pampangan and Pangasinan. They are close to the Ta-galog in their language (which belongs to the Indonesian group) and material culture. Their religion is Catholicism. Their chief occupation is agriculture (cultivation of rice and fruit), but fishing also plays a large role. Handicrafts, especially weaving, are well developed. The Sambal are being intensively assimilated by neighboring peoples (the Ilocano in the north and Ta-galog in the south).
