Established by the Buddha, it is the world's oldest body of celibate clerics. Together with the Buddha and the dharma, it makes up the Threefold Refuge, a basic creed of Buddhism. Buddha established the bhiksu sangha for men and later the bhiksuni sangha for women. Members depend on alms from the community, since they are discouraged from engaging in commerce or agriculture. They live according to the Vinaya Pitaka. Sangha (also Sanga), a river in central Africa, in the Central African Empire and the People’s Republic of the Congo and partially along the border of the United Republic of Cameroon; a right tributary of the Congo (Zaire) River. The Sangha originates at the confluence of the Kadéï and Mambéré rivers. It is approximately 790 km long measuring from the site of the confluence and approximately 1,300 km long measuring from the source of the Kadéï. It drains an area of approximately 200,000 sq km. The largest tributaries are the Dja, on the right, and Likouala-aux-herbes, on the left. The river is fed primarily by rain. The mean flow rate measured at Ouesso fluctuates from 700 eu m per sec in March to 4,250 cu m per sec in October-November. The Sangha is navigable all the way to the confluence of its sources.
