Samoans
the indigenous population of Samoa in the Pacific Ocean. In 1971, an estimated 170,000 Samoans were living in Samoa, and about 15,000 in New Zealand and the Hawaiian Islands. In terms of origin, language, and culture, the Samoans belong to the western Polynesians. With regard to religion, about 80 percent are Protestants, and the remainder are mostly Catholics. The chief occupations are tropical agriculture and fishing. Alongside the development of capitalist relations the social structure of the Samoans preserves the rural commune, the extended family, and the institution of elected hereditary chiefs.
