Samoilov, Evgenii Valerianovich 

Born Apr. 3 (16), 1912, in St. Petersburg. Soviet actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1951.

Samoilov graduated from the Leningrad Art Secondary Specialized Polytechnic in 1930 and joined the troupe of the Actors’ Art Theater. He acted at the Meyerhold Theater from 1934 to 1938 and the Mayakovsky Theater in Moscow from 1940 to 1967. He began acting at the Malyi Theater in 1968.

Samoilov’s roles have included Oleg Koshevoi in Young Guard (based on Fadeev’s work), the title role in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Platonov in Shtein’s Ocean, Jason in Euripides’ Medea, and Shuiskii in A. K. Tolstoy’s Tsar Fedor Ioannovich.

Samoilov began acting in motion pictures in 1934. His roles have included Nikolai Shchors in Shchors (1939), Lebedev in Bright Path (1940), Kolchin in The Hearts of Four Persons (1945), Kudriashov in At Six P. M. After the War (1944), Frunze in The Fall of the Emirate (1955), and General Skobelev in Heroes of Shipka (1955).

Samoilov received the State Prize in 1941, 1946, and 1947. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
