Blatchford, Samuel (1820–93) Supreme Court justice; born in New York City. Appointed by President Grant to a federal district court (1867), he rose to circuit judge in 1872. President Arthur appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court (1882–93) where he was known for his expertise in patent law.
