Samuil Grigorevich Buachidze

Buachidze, Samuil Grigor’evich 

(Party pseudonym, Noi). Born July 5 (17), 1882, in the village of Tsartskhnali, Kutaisi Province; died July 3, 1918, in Vladikavkaz (modern Ordzhonikidze). Figure in the Russian revolutionary movement and one of the leaders of the struggle for Soviet power in the Northern Caucasus. Member of the CPSU from 1902.

Buachidze was born into a peasant family. He graduated from an agricultural school and completed teachers’ courses. In 1905 he was a member of the Imeretia-Mingrel’ia committee, which was one of the organizers of the armed struggle of the peasants in western Georgia. During 1906-07 he did revolutionary work in Vladikavkaz, Rostov-on-Don, and Moscow, He was persecuted. Having escaped from exile in Yakutia in 1911, he emigrated abroad. In Switzerland he met V. I. Lenin and worked on assignments of the Central Committee of the RSDLP (Bolshevik).

Buachidze returned to Russia in April 1917. He was a member of the Vladikavkaz soviet and later a member of its presidium. He was chairman of the Vladikavkaz committee of the RSDLP (Bolshevik). From February 1917 he was a member of the Terek Peoples’ soviet and chairman of the Collegium for the Preservation of Social and Revolutionary Order. From March 1918, Buachidze was chairman of the Council of Peoples’ Commissars of the Terek Peoples’ Republic. Counterrevolutionaries killed him at a meeting.
