Name Origin: For the Presidio de San Augustin de Ahumada (Fort of Saint Augustine of Ahumada), Mission Nuestra Senora de los Dolores de los Ais (Mission of Our Lady of Sorrows of the Ais), which was established on Ayish Bayou by the Marquis de San Miguel de Ahuayo in 1721. Area (sq mi): 592.21 (land 527.87; water 64.34). Pop per sq mi: 16.90. Pop 2005: 8,907. State rank: 175. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.40%; 1990-2000 11.80%. Pop 2000: 8,946 (White 67.80%; Black or African American 27.90%; Hispanic or Latino 3.60%; Asian 0.20%; Other 2.50%). Foreign born: 2.00%. Median age: 42.10.
