San Bernardino Pass

Mountain pass, Lepontine Alps, southeastern Switzerland. Its altitude is 6,775 ft (2,065 m). The village of San Bernardino, just south of the pass, is a popular year-round resort. A tunnel beneath the pass was opened in 1967, improving travel through the region. The pass was named for St. Bernardine of Siena, who preached in the area in the early 15th century.

Within minutes we were surrounded by mountains we motored on through Austria for about 30 minutes and we were soon in Switzerland and at the bottom of the San Bernardino Pass which was featured on Top Gear's best roads in the world edition.
That saw the three presenters, including Solihull's Richard Hammond, driving an Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Porsche respectively on a route that took in the Col de Turini mountain top in the south of France, the San Bernardino Pass in the Swiss Alps and the Stelvio Pass in Italy that contains 60 hairpin bends.
The fatal collision between Mr Chambers' lorry and a minibus happened on Thursday in a tunnel on the San Bernardino pass in the south of Switzerland.
