San Fernando, city, Argentina

San Fernando (săn fərnăn`dō), city (1991 pop. 144,761), Buenos Aires prov., E Argentina. It is a district administrative center in the Greater Buenos Aires area. The city was established in 1806 to replace the port of Las Conchas, which had been destroyed by a storm. An important landmark is the Juan N. Madero museum and library. San Fernando is connected to other Argentine cities by three rail lines, a national highway, and an airport.

The valley, first entered by Europeans in 1769, was early used for journeys to N California. Gold was found in 1842 before the big gold strike. Founded in 1874, San Fernando is the oldest city in the valley. San Fernando Mission (1797) is nearby.

a city and port in Spain, in Andalusia, in Cádiz Province, on the coast of the Gulf of Cádiz, near the city of Cádiz. Population, 60,200 (1970). San Fernando has docks and an arsenal. A naval academy and an observatory are located there. Salt is mined in the area.

a city in the state of Trinidad and Tobago, in the southwestern part of Trinidad. Population, 37,300 (1970). San Fernando is a port on the Gulf of Paria of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the trade center of a petroleum-producing region. Industry includes oil refining, production of sugar, and saw-milling. San Fernando was founded in 1786.
