Name Origin: For the San Jacinto River, which runs through the county; site of the battle that eventually won Texan independence from Mexico (1836). Spanish 'Saint Hyacinth' for the many water lilies. Area (sq mi): 627.90 (land 570.65; water 57.25). Pop per sq mi: 43.50. Pop 2005: 24,801. State rank: 101. Pop change: 2000-20005 11.50%; 1990-2000 35.90%. Pop 2000: 22,246 (White 80.80%; Black or African American 12.60%; Hispanic or Latino 4.90%; Asian 0.30%; Other 3.50%). Foreign born: 2.50%.
