In east-central TX, northwest of Beaumont; organized Aug 13, 1870 from Liberty County. Name Origin: For the San Jacinto River, which runs through the county; site of the battle that eventually won Texan independence from Mexico (1836). Spanish 'Saint Hyacinth' for the many water lilies.
