San Juan Islands (săn wän), archipelago of 172 islands constituting San Juan co., NW Wash., E of Vancouver Island. The islands were visited and named c.1790 by Spanish explorers. The islands were the subject of the San Juan Boundary Dispute San Juan Boundary Dispute, controversy between the United States and Great Britain over the U.S.–British Columbia boundary. It is sometimes called the Northwest Boundary Dispute.

Having spent all of my childhood summers in the San Juan Islands, I already knew the beauty of the long-stretching archipelago that reaches from northern Washington State to the southern tip of Alaska, but I had never traveled north of Victoria and the southern Gulf Islands, a region which is covered with lush forests on rocky outcrops, trees filled with bald eagles, and waters containing pods of orcas.
Some 272 Bayliners and about 800 boaters convened at this well-known San Juan Islands marina to kick-off the cruising season.
As a result, PWCs have been banned from 66 of 87 national parks, Lake Tahoe in California and Washington's San Juan Islands (see "Raging Waters," In Brief, July/August 1996).
