San Luis, city (1991 pop. 110,353), capital of San Luis prov., W central Argentina. The city is the commercial center of an area producing cattle, corn, and asparagus; the surrounding area has timber and mineral resources. San Luis is a popular resort. Founded in 1594, it was burned and sacked by Native Americans in 1712 and 1720.
San Luis a province in central Argentina, in the western part of the pampas. Area, 76,700 sq km. Population, 183,500 (1970). The capital is the city of San Luis. The province’s economy is based on extensive agriculture, for example, the raising of beef cattle and sheep, as well as the growing of grain crops. Tungsten and beryllium ores are mined in the east.
