In east-central NM, east of Santa Fe; original county; organized Jan 9, 1852 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the town of San Miguel del Bado, Spanish 'Saint Michael of the ford,' a river crossing on the Pecos River on the Old Santa Fe Trail.

Area (sq mi): 4735.63 (land 4717.04; water 18.59). Pop per sq mi: 6.30.
Pop 2005: 29,530. State rank: 16. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.00%; 1990-2000 17.00%. Pop 2000: 30,126 (White 18.90%; Black or African American 0.80%; Hispanic or Latino 78.00%; Asian 0.50%; Other 42.40%). Foreign born: 2.50%. Median age: 35.10.
Income 2000: per capita $13,268; median household $26,524; Pop below poverty level: 24.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $16,489-$19,956.

    On southwestern border of CO; organized Nov 1, 1861, from Ouray County (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the river, which flows through the county; Spanish for Saint Michael (the Archangel).
