San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park Location: 8 miles south of Escondido on Highway 78, next to the San Diego Wild Animal Park. Facilities: Visitor center, exhibits, restrooms (é), hiking and nature trails. Special Features: Park honors soldiers who fought in the battle between US and Californio forces on December 6, 1846 during the Mexican-American War. The battle proved to be one of the bloodiest and most controversial in California history, as General Stephen Kearny and General Andres Pico both claimed victory. The park has been set aside, not as a monument to war, but as a reminder of the passions that can lead nations to war.
