In central TX, southeast of San Angelo; organized Feb 1, 1856 from Bexar County. Name Origin: For the San Saba River, which flows through it; Spanish contraction of San Sabado 'Holy Saturday,' named for the day before Easter when Spanish explorers discovered it.

Area (sq mi): 1138.25 (land 1134.47; water 3.78). Pop per sq mi: 5.40.
Pop 2005: 6,076. State rank: 195. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.80%; 1990-2000 14.50%. Pop 2000: 6,186 (White 74.70%; Black or African American 2.70%; Hispanic or Latino 21.50%; Asian 0.10%; Other 12.70%). Foreign born: 5.50%. Median age: 39.40.
Income 2000: per capita $15,309; median household $30,104; Pop below poverty level: 16.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,458-$21,005.
