Sanders, Bernie (1941–  ) mayor, U.S. representative; born in New York City. After working as a free-lance writer, carpenter, and youth counselor, he became the first Socialist mayor of Burlington, Vt. (1982–90). An unsuccessful candidate for governor in 1972, 1976, and 1986, and for the U.S. Senate in 1971 and 1974, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as an Independent (1991).
