On the northwestern border of MT, northwest of Missoula; organized Feb 5, 1907 from Missoula County. Name Origin: For Wilbur Fisk Sanders (1834-1905), officer in the Civil War and U.S. senator from MT (1890-93).

Area (sq mi): 2790.03 (land 2762.17; water 27.86). Pop per sq mi: 4.00.
Pop 2005: 11,057. State rank: 18. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.10%; 1990-2000 18.00%. Pop 2000: 10,227 (White 90.90%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.60%; Asian 0.30%; Other 7.60%). Foreign born: 2.00%. Median age: 44.20.
Income 2000: per capita $14,593; median household $26,852; Pop below poverty level: 17.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $16,941-$18,888.
Unemployment 2004: 6.60%. Change from 2000: -1.70%. Median travel time to work: 22.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 14.50%.
