Sandia

Sandia

one of the most ancient settlements of the Paleo-Indian culture, discovered in a cave in the Sandia Mountains, in the central part of New Mexico, USA.

Two cultural levels separated by a layer of yellow ocher were excavated between 1936 and 1940. Fluted Folsom spearpoints made of stone were found in the upper level. The lower level contained the remains of two hearths and spearpoints flaked on both surfaces, with a lateral groove at the base (the Sandia type). The fauna found in both levels included horses, camels, and woolly mammoths; the lower level also contained masto-donts. The finds from the upper level are probably approximately 10,000 years old, and the contents of the lower level are 13,000 to 11,000 years old.
