Sanford, Charles Steadman, Jr. (1936– ) banker; born in Savannah, Ga. He graduated from the University of Georgia (1958) and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (1960) before joining Bankers Trust Co. (New York City), the eighth largest U.S. bank, in 1961. Named president in 1983, he rose to chairman and chief executive officer in 1987. He served as an overseer of the Wharton School.
