Sanford, Terry (1917– ) governor, U.S. senator; born in Laurinburg, N.C. A World War II army hero, he became a lawyer and state senator in 1953. As governor (Dem., N.C.; 1961–65), he sponsored progressive legislation including the Higher Education Act (1963) and the North Carolina Fund (1963). After writing Storm over the States (1967), he became Duke University president (1969–87). He took office as North Carolina's senator in 1987. How to thank TFD for its existence?
