Name Origin: For the Wyandot chief who is the main character in Henry Whiting's poem "Sannilac." The name was spelled with only one 'n' in the proclamation by Gov. Lewis Cass (1782-1866) that announced the formation of the county. Area (sq mi): 1590.22 (land 963.80; water 626.42). Pop per sq mi: 46.40. Pop 2005: 44,752. State rank: 39. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.50%; 1990-2000 11.60%. Pop 2000: 44,547 (White 95.40%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 2.80%; Asian 0.30%; Other 2.60%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 37.80. Income 2000: per capita $17,089; median household $36,870; Pop below poverty level: 10.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,350-$24,811. Unemployment 2004: 9.30%.
